Navy Chief Admiral Tripathi meets wireless tech pioneer Paulraj, discusses AI and tech-led defence transformation

New Delhi: In a key strategic interaction, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), met with renowned technologist and retired naval officer, Commodore Arogyaswami Paulraj, to deliberate on bolstering India’s capabilities in Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductor development, and the indigenisation of defence systems.
Commodore Paulraj, originally from Coimbatore, served in the Indian Navy for 26 years and played a pivotal role in developing the APSOH SONAR system. After his service, he joined Stanford University, where he pioneered MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) antenna technology—now a backbone of 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi networks globally.
Before the meeting with the Navy Chief, Commodore Paulraj delivered a keynote session at Nausena Bhawan, addressing senior officers of India’s defence forces. His talk focused on AI, semiconductor technology, autonomous systems, and modern warfare strategies, all crucial for India’s security and self-reliance in defence tech.
Drawing from his extensive R&D background, Paulraj emphasized the urgent need for India to strengthen its indigenous capabilities in core technologies. He stated that achieving self-reliance in these areas is critical to the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047, according to the Indian Navy.
Simultaneously, on June 10, an Indian Navy delegation led by Rear Admiral Shantanu Jha, NM, took part in the 10th Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks with the Royal Malaysian Navy in Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian side was headed by First Admiral Harisundar Rajoo, Senior Director of Operations and Training. Both navies discussed ongoing partnerships and mapped out future joint initiatives for enhanced maritime cooperation.
Meanwhile, in Penang, Secretary (East) P. Kumaran met with Hajah Johariah Binti Abdul Wahab, Permanent Secretary at Brunei’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the East Asia Summit Senior Officials' Meeting (EAS SOM). The discussion centered around strengthening the India–Brunei relationship and deepening engagement under ASEAN and other regional frameworks.
