Government Launches bank.in and fin.in Domains to Strengthen Cybersecurity in Financial Sector
The bank.in and fin.in domains are being introduced as part of an initiative to promote the use of India-hosted domains in critical sectors like banking and financial services.
"This initiative aims to build a more resilient internet ecosystem in India while addressing the growing threats of fraud and cybersecurity risks, including phishing and other malicious activities that endanger online transactions. With the bank.in and fin.in domains, the financial sector will have a distinct and easily recognizable online presence, making it simpler for consumers to verify authentic URLs," said S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India, in an interview with Anoop Verma, Editor-News, ETGovernment.
In the discussion that followed, Krishnan highlighted the government's efforts to advance AI, develop the electronics sector, and fortify India's internet security framework.
Why are these domains necessary?
With the adoption of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), the government, through NIXI and domain registrar entities, can now offer more domain names. The launch of bank.in and fin.in is a strategic move to enhance cybersecurity and improve trust in financial transactions. These domains will help financial institutions establish a verified online presence, ensuring greater security and transparency for users accessing financial services.
